Wow! The first two weeks of school are already over! We have been getting back to the routine of school, building our classroom community and learning about rules and expectations in first grade. In Language Arts we are reviewing, syllables, short a, handwriting, and writing complete sentences. We've read a few books, such as The Kissing Hand and Leo, the Late Bloomer and have made meaningful connections during our reading time, as well as identifying sight words (high frequency words) and color words.
In math, we've already dived into our Go Math! books and are discussing pictographs, bar graphs and will begin discussing addition next week (although we are decomposing the number of the day during our calendar time).
Along with learning our rules in our classroom, we are discussing the importance of rules in our community and country for our Family and Community Social Studies unit. We will be learning to identify symbols of the United States and why they are important.
I really enjoyed seeing many students and parents at Open House in August and hope you can make it to Back to School Night this Wednesday, September 12 at 6:30-7:30 for first grade. Please come directly to my room and Mr. Raff will begin speaking at 6:30 over our announcement system for 10-15 minutes. The rest of the time, I'll be sharing a PowerPoint and have time for questions after the presentation.
